Gardeners and Earth Day

My St. Cloud Times garden column today focuses on the ways gardeners improve the environment. Reducing water runoff, providing habitat and food for beneficial insects and birds, nourishing the soil while reducing landfill use, and saving energy and improving air quality by planting trees (if you want to do one great thing for the environment, plant a tree) are among the ways gardeners keep everyday as Earth Day.

  1. I have plans to plant at least a dozen trees this coming month as soon as the snow melts around here. The saying, ‘The best time to plant a tree is today’ (loosely quoted) is great advice.
