The May/June 2010 issue of Northern Gardener has been available for a week or so, and it would make great reading for the rainy days we are having. The cover story is by veteran garden writer Marge Hols and is about one of her favorite vines — small flowered clematis. (By the way, Marge settles the age-old debate kle-MAT-is or KLEM–uh- tus, and it is the later pronunciation.) However you say it, these are gorgeous flowers and a stunning vertical detail in any garden. Check out Marge’s favorites and the wonderful photographs by her friend and fellow gardener, Carla Henry.
Other articles in this issue (our biggest of the year) cover topics such as growing squash in small spaces, winners of the MSHS awards and Don Engebretson’s system for rating perennials. Northfield readers might be especially interested in two local connections. Karen K. Hansen (St. Olaf grad and former Northfielder) describes the lovely English-style garden of Northfielders Barbara and Jonathan Hill in this issue’s garden profile and Northfield native (and another St. Olaf grad) Joe May took the photographs for Susan Davis Price’s story on using plants with lacy foliage.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
