About this Blog

My northern garden in winter.

Thank your for stopping by! My Northern Garden is a blog for sharing ideas and experiences with people who grow vegetables, shrubs, trees, and flowers in USDA Zones 2-5. The blog, which has been on the web since 2007 (this is its second address), extends the work I do as editor of Northern Gardener magazine. The magazine is the official publication of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society and it has been around for more than 140 years! It’s the only publication devoted exclusively to gardening in cold climates.

The blog covers an array of topics from how-to start seeds to battling critters (we have plenty of them in my garden!) to pruning shrubs and trees. If you have ideas for topics you’d like the blog or magazine to cover, please e-mail them to me at mary@maryschier.com.

Re: Weed Of the week,May 1st Stinging nettel, These plants love my rich soil on my farm. I soon learned to ignore the stinging. I just realized that, it must affect people differently. However it is an excellent addition to any soup, chicken miso, etc. Nettles have been part of my flower gardens for 30 years,I used to eat my mean chickens , I also eat my mean weeds. Mary in Eleva
